The Geopark

A unique rainbow-hued spectacle

A natural landmark

Where earth paints its own masterpiece

Red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple and yellow... Surreal, lunar-like dunes stretch before you. Tucked within lush vegetation, this rare landform is both delicate and dramatic. This is a geological wonder shaped by volcanic forces, minerals and time. One of nature’s most unexpected and enduring creations, still visible today.

Earth’s palette

Minerals, erosion and climate shaped this vibrant dune formation, where colours resist mixing and land reveals a visible archive of Mauritius’ geological past.

What Awaits You

How It All
Began?

The site opened to visitors in the 1960s and became Mauritius’ first geopark dedicated to geology, education and preservation.

Volcanic origin

Basaltic lava cooled at different rates, producing iron and aluminium oxides. Over time, erosion and climate shaped the layered, visible colours of the dunes.

Scientific interest

The phenomenon was first documented in 1879 by the Royal Society of Arts and Sciences, highlighting the soil’s resistance to erosion and rare visible stratification.

Protected site

Recognised for its geological and cultural value, the site evolved into a geopark integrating environmental education, community collaboration and biodiversity conservation.
